From less irritations and side effects to healthier skin, the benefits of switching to a natural skincare routine are many. However going natural with your beauty regimen isn’t always easy and you're probably unsure about where to start. Sometimes it can be hard to understand what’s really in the skin care product you’re about to buy, especially with the trend of using popular terms, like green, eco-friendly, natural etc on labels. This practice is called green washing. I have always advised (anyone who would listen) that the only way to ensure your purchases are as natural as advertised, is to read labels and research it's ingredients.
WHAT DOES NATURAL/ORGANIC REALLY MEAN?
The term “Natural” means that the formula of a product is 100-percent synthetic free. To ensure that the product you're about to take home is completely natural and doesn't just include a few "natural" ingredients, you must pay attention to the ingredient list. If the first few ingredients are not plant based then the product probably isn't as natural as the label claims.
There are no regulating bodies in the local market but when purchasing foreign based products look for a certification that clearly spells out whether the product is organic or natural. Do not rely solely on a product's marketing claims.
Organic ingredients are grown without synthetic fertilizers or pesticides. When 95-percent of a product's ingredients are farmed organically, it is considered organic and it will usually be certified from a verified regulating body like USDA.
NATURAL VS SYNTHETIC
Many people have concerns about the effectiveness of natural products. However in many cases natural skincare has been proven to be more effective when compared to synthetic options.
Natural ingredients are the most powerful ingredients in the world. Synthetic ingredients are created in labs and are in most cases a cheaper and easier to manipulate version of it's natural counterpart. Unfortunately these synthetics are usually also toxic and can cause a host of health issues after long term use. The general rule of thumb is "if you cannot pronounce it, then do not put it on your skin". The chemical names of some natural ingredients can sometimes confuse this process, which is where personal research comes in.
It's important to get familiar with the most toxic of all ingredients and those that must be completely avoided. Ingredients such as Parabens, Sodium lauryl sulfates (SLS)/Sodium laureth sulfate (SLES), Triclosan, Phthalates, Cyclomethicone (D4) and cyclopentasiloxane (D5), Methylisothiazolinone, BHA, BHT, Formaldehyde. These are all ingredients that should be avoided when purchasing not only skincare but everyday products as well. Your health literally depends on it.
